Get the most out of your first surf holidays
Surf Samara is the best spot if you are all about finally starting to surf and get the most out of it. We are all about letting our guests focus on surfing the most they can, while offering insights into the culture of our country in small groups of people.
Our camp is located on the pacific coastline in between playa guiones and santa teresa. Which means we are off the hot spots and offer a unique and genuine experience.
Samara, Guanacaste
Samara is located right at the coast of the pacific ocean. It’s a small place with only about 3500 people living there. Samara, which is our surfcamps home, is part of the province of Guanacaste. From the camp, it’s about a 4 hours drive to Costa Rica’s capital San Jose, and about 2 hours to the airport of Liberia, which also is the home of the national park “Rincón de la Vieja”. As from today, Samara hosts a number of restaurants, surf schools and even a language school.
When to go surfing in Costa Rica
The dry and wet season splits the travel times for Costa Rica into two periods. Although it’s very enjoyable to visit Costa Rica all year, winter, meaning December to March, is the dry season and therefore the most common time for people to visit Costa Rica.
Winter brings more offshore-wind, so it‘s a common time for guests to come surfing. April to August is wet season and waves tend to be bigger at that time than the rest of the year. So for both beginners and advanced surfers, there will be something to catch all year.
You can expect temperatures in the air up to about 40 degrees celsius. Water temperatures in the ocean easily reach something around 28 degrees celsius. No need for wetsuits.
Semi-private surf lessons
While joining our surf classes you will be able to surf with certified surf coaches only. With a maximum of 3 guests, our surf coaches want to make sure they can keep their eye on every single one in their group.
Surfing here at Costa Rica’s western coast during winter is a very good choice. During dry season, wind conditions are especially good, because wind is coming right from where you want it for surfing; Offshore.
Offshore-wind means, wind is coming from the shore, the coast, moving towards the ocean. This makes waves break slower and cleaner than other wind directions. Which in turn means you have smoother, calmer and longer waves to ride. Perfect for taking first steps on the surfboard!

Our camp, the tree houses and a our tent

Our place lies a little outside of Samara on a small hilltop, surrounded by a huge and beautiful tropical garden.
We are located just a couple of minutes from some of the surf spots we often visit during surf sessions. Built onto pillars, our 2 treehouses and one tent allow you to calm down, relax and recover in between surf sessions. They offer private space and an opportunity to enjoy a view completely covered in the greens of Costa Rica’s beautiful flora and fauna.
